XV***

(DEUTSCHE VERSION UNTEN)

NEIL CLEMENTS, XV ***
November 13, 2009 – January 9, 2010

For it’s new opening, Anne Mosseri-Marlio Galerie is excited to present the first solo show in Switzerland of Neil Clements (UK, 1982) whose work pursues a dialog between various aspects of modern culture. He integrates an interest in the vocabulary of late modernism and musical references in the recent paintings and sculptures presented in XV***.

Guitar aficionados may recognize the Gibson Explorer and Ibanez XV 500 guitars in the paintings whose shapes are transcribed from instruments used by rock musicians. Inspired by the contemporaneous development of the shaped canvas and the patenting of Gibson’s “Modernistic” guitar range in the late 1950’s, the heroic aspirations of large scale abstraction are recontextualized by this alternative reading of theatricality.

The clean, even brushstrokes and color combinations emulate the serial preoccupations of minimalism, as well as the finish fetish culture of the California Cool School both of which are source material for the artist. These artists’ attention to surface’s finish and personalized design as applied to cars and surfboards in the 1960’s is well documented.

The employment of shaped canvases and the use of a commissioned neon sign in Built. Lacking., 2009 is a continuation of the dialog between past and present, and establishes a self-reflective position to the often antagonistic relationship between the technologically sophisticated and artistic craftsmanship. Clements’ studio produced cube sculptures of aluminum on plywood remind us that Larry Bell’s first cubes were made of leftover glass and wood from the framer’s shop.

Through the literal abstraction of a guitar another temporal reading of the eccentrically shaped canvas is suggested.Similarly, Born Too Late, 2008, plays with time in its reference to the shared title of a song by 1950’s R&B group the Poni-Tails and the 1980’s doom metal band St. Vitus. When seen in conjunction with Forced Comparative, 2009, a projected piece which juxtaposes a 1969 self titled Black Sabbath album cover with Robert Morris’ artwork ‘Steam’ (1966 / 74) questions arise about how we construct our understanding of history, particularly with regards to the artwork’s relationship to other forms of cultural production. Time warps and reminiscence enables us to re-discover the past with a different optic.

Networked Leisure, 2008, reuses a 1972 photograph from the Gemini GEL archive in which the artists Richard Serra and Frank Stella are playing basketball with the studios’ master printers. By overtly watermarking the image with the Gemini corporate logo, the resulting work reflects on how sealed or irreconcilably distant these figures seem.

A Northern Irish artist living and working in Glasgow, Neil Clements has studied the history of Californian artists and their influences. For the gallery’s re-inauguration (re-birth of the Cool), a re-evaluation of the work of these masters of light and steel seems appropriate.

Previous solo presentations include Konsortium Gallery, Dusseldorf, 2007, doggerfisher at NADA, Miami Beach, 2008 and doggerfisher, Edinburgh, 2009.

NEIL CLEMENTS, XV***

13. November 2009 – 9. Januar 2010
