Lars Christensen presents new paintings based on a dual plane
system – background and foreground. The colors serve as markers between the
planes. Known for his energetic style and perforations of the canvas, he aims
to show acrylic based colors as function and as an industrial substance that is
identically produced, whose value is determined by how it is manipulated and
what happens once it is applied on or through the canvas.
The innovative approach used on the flat plane to present other
dimensions and contrasts offers another fascinating perception of shapes,
nuances, dichotomies, in the vast sphere of contemporary painting. These newest
works are his reaction to colors as emitters of energy, motion and matter.
The organic structure is created by perforating holes or slits
of various sizes in the canvas so that paint, when pushed through, is allowed
to “grow” and reproduce in many forms and shapes due to the laws of physics.
The protrusions and colors appear as an endless pattern that tightens and
expands the space, thus establishing the transition between the physical and
mental aspects of the images.
The relativity of colors, how each interacts with the surface
and with each other, as well as with the interaction of the light and space is
explored in the paintings in various series (White/Colors, Monochrome, Monochrome/Polychrome,
etc.). By applying the paint as a form, a movable and manipulable substance and
not just as a coloring material, the process adds a third dimension, creation
of a sculptural expression. The work is simultaneously a painting and sculpture
which changes depending on the angle from which it is appreciated.
Lars Christensen (DK,
1972) lives and works in Copenhagen. His paintings are in The National Danish
Art Foundation, Ny Carlsberg Foundation, Copenhagen Cultural Fund, Nykredit
Collection, Denmark, Espoo Museum of Modern Art (EMMA), Tapiola, Finland and
many private collections in Europe and the United States. His works were
presented in September 2016 for the first time in the United States at EXPO
CHICAGO in a booth dedicated to him and American artist Meg Webster.
Christensen has been part of the exhibit ‘The Brask Collection meets
Willumsen’, J.F. Willumsen Museum, Frederikssund, DK. He has had solo shows
with Anne Mosseri-Marlio Galerie in Zürich and Basel since 2011.
